How to Turn On the Rebuy Connector Before Shopify Retires Script Tags

Keep Rebuy running on your store after Shopify stops supporting script tags on March 1, 2027.

Written by Christian Sokolowski

This guide explains how to turn on the Rebuy Connector, Rebuy's app embed for Shopify themes. Turning on the Rebuy Connector keeps Rebuy running on your storefront after Shopify stops supporting script tags on March 1, 2027. It also makes Rebuy load faster on every page.

This guide applies to all Rebuy merchants, on any Shopify plan and any Shopify theme.

Why Shopify's script tag retirement affects Rebuy

Shopify is retiring script tags, an older method apps use to load code onto a storefront. Shopify is replacing script tags with app embeds, which you turn on and off from your Shopify theme editor. The Rebuy Connector is Rebuy's app embed and the replacement that Shopify recommends.

Shopify is making this change in two phases:

Date

What Shopify changes

What it means for your store

October 1, 2026

Apps can no longer add new script tags to a store.

Script tags already on your store keep working for now.

March 1, 2027

Shopify stops running script tags on all storefronts.

Any app that still relies on a script tag, including Rebuy, stops working on your storefront unless its app embed is turned on.

How the Rebuy Connector makes Rebuy load faster

The Rebuy Connector loads Rebuy faster than the older script tag method. The Connector starts loading Rebuy at the top of every page instead of at the end of the page. This means Smart Cart, merchandising widgets, and Smart Search are ready for shoppers sooner.

Who needs to turn on the Rebuy Connector

Every Rebuy merchant needs the Rebuy Connector turned on to keep Rebuy working after March 1, 2027. What you need to do depends on whether you just installed Rebuy or have been using it for a while.

  • New installs: Every merchant who installs Rebuy needs to turn on the Rebuy Connector. Without the Connector, Rebuy only loads on pages that contain a Rebuy widget block.

  • Existing stores: Any store that does not have the Rebuy Connector turned on yet. If you see a Keep Rebuy running on your store card on your Rebuy dashboard, your store needs this update.

How to turn on the Rebuy Connector if you just installed Rebuy

If you just installed Rebuy, turning on the Rebuy Connector takes one step in the Rebuy dashboard and one click in Shopify. New installs show a card titled Last step: connect Rebuy to your store.

  1. In the Rebuy dashboard, find the Last step: connect Rebuy to your store card.

  2. Click Turn on Rebuy Connector. Shopify's theme editor opens with the Rebuy Connector already switched on.

  3. Click Save in the Shopify theme editor.

Note: New installs have the Enable Rebuy JS via Rebuy Connector setting turned on automatically. Once you click Save in the theme editor, you're all set and do not need to change anything in Rebuy App Settings.

How to turn on the Rebuy Connector if you've been using script tags / installed prior to October 1, 2026

If your store has been using Rebuy for a while, turning on the Rebuy Connector takes two steps: one in your Shopify theme and one in Rebuy App Settings. Existing stores show a card titled Keep Rebuy running on your store on the Rebuy dashboard.

Important: Complete these steps in order. Turn on the Rebuy Connector in your Shopify theme first, then turn on the setting in Rebuy. The Rebuy setting tells the Connector to load Rebuy, so the Connector must already be on in your theme for the setting to work.

Step 1: Turn on the Rebuy Connector in your Shopify theme

The first step for existing stores is to switch on the Rebuy Connector app embed in your live Shopify theme. You can start from either the Rebuy dashboard or Shopify.

  1. Open the theme editor using one of these options: in the Rebuy dashboard, click Turn on Rebuy Connector on the Keep Rebuy running on your store card, or in Shopify, go to Sales Channels > Online Store > Customize, then click App embeds in the left sidebar.

  2. Make sure the Rebuy Connector toggle is switched on.

  3. Click Save.

Step 2: Turn on the Rebuy Connector setting in Rebuy App Settings

The second step for existing stores is to turn on the setting that tells Rebuy to load through the Rebuy Connector.

  1. In the Rebuy dashboard, go to Settings > App Settings.

  2. Turn on Enable Rebuy JS via Rebuy Connector. This setting was previously named Install Rebuy Script Tag and Disable Rebuy JS.

Rebuy JS settings in App Settings: what each one does

Rebuy App Settings has two Rebuy JS settings that control how Rebuy loads on your storefront. Both settings have been renamed, so you may see the older names in past emails or articles.

Setting (current name)

Previous name

What it does

What to do

Enable Rebuy JS via Rebuy Connector

Install Rebuy Script Tag and Disable Rebuy JS

Loads Rebuy through the Rebuy Connector app embed

Turn on, and leave on

Enable Rebuy JS via script tag (legacy, ends Mar 1, 2027)

Enable Rebuy JS

Loads Rebuy through the older script tag method

Leave as is

Important: Do not turn off either Rebuy JS setting. Turning off the legacy script tag setting permanently removes your store's script tag, and it cannot be added back because Shopify no longer allows apps to add new script tags. Turning off the Rebuy Connector setting stops the Connector from loading Rebuy. Having both settings on at the same time is harmless.

How to check that the Rebuy Connector is working

You can confirm the Rebuy Connector is working in two ways: from the Rebuy dashboard or from your storefront's page source.

  • Rebuy dashboard check: The Keep Rebuy running on your store card disappears from your Rebuy dashboard once the Rebuy Connector is on.

  • Storefront check: Open your live storefront, right-click anywhere on the page, and choose View page source. Search the page source for rebuy.js. When the Rebuy Connector is set up correctly, rebuy.js appears near the top of the page, alongside a few lines that reference rebuyengine.com.

Troubleshooting: Rebuy isn't loading after turning on the Rebuy Connector

If you turned on the Rebuy Connector but Rebuy still is not loading on your storefront, check these three things:

  1. The Rebuy setting is on. In the Rebuy dashboard, go to Settings > App Settings and confirm Enable Rebuy JS via Rebuy Connector is turned on.

  2. The Connector is on for your live theme. In Shopify, go to Sales Channels > Online Store. Confirm you turned on the Rebuy Connector in your published (live) theme, not only in a draft or unpublished theme.

  3. You clicked Save. Open Customize > App embeds in your live theme and confirm the Rebuy Connector toggle is on and saved.

If Rebuy is still not loading after checking these, chat with the Rebuy support team and we'll take a look.

Rebuy Connector FAQs

Do I need to turn on the Rebuy Connector right now?

You do not need to turn on the Rebuy Connector today if Rebuy is working on your store now. Rebuy will keep working through the legacy script tag until March 1, 2027. We recommend turning on the Rebuy Connector now so you're set well ahead of Shopify's deadline and get faster loading right away.

What happens if I dismiss the "Keep Rebuy running on your store" card?

If you dismiss the Keep Rebuy running on your store card on your Rebuy dashboard, it comes back after 7 days until the Rebuy Connector is on. Starting February 1, 2027, the card shows on every visit to the dashboard until the Connector is on.

What happens to the Rebuy Connector if I switch themes?

The Rebuy Connector is turned on separately for each Shopify theme. If you switch to a new theme, open that theme's Customize > App embeds panel and turn on the Rebuy Connector before you publish the new theme. Otherwise, Rebuy may not load once the new theme goes live.

Does the Rebuy Connector affect Smart Cart custom code, checkout, or post-purchase offers?

No, the Rebuy Connector does not affect Smart Cart custom code, Checkout Extensions, or Post-Purchase Offers. Smart Cart custom code runs inside Rebuy, so it works wherever Rebuy loads. Checkout Extensions and Post-Purchase Offers load separately from your storefront theme and are not affected by Shopify's script tag change.

Will my Rebuy widgets or Smart Cart look different after I turn on the Rebuy Connector?

No, turning on the Rebuy Connector does not change how Rebuy looks on your storefront. Your widgets, Smart Cart, and Rebuy settings stay exactly as they are. The only difference is that Rebuy loads earlier on each page.
