What is the Decorative Tier in Rebuy's Tiered Progress Bar?

The Tiered Progress Bar (TPB) in Rebuy's Smart Cart supports multiple tier types. The Decorative Tier is a visual milestone that shows customers how close they are to a cart subtotal threshold, without automatically triggering a discount, free gift, or any other reward through the TPB itself.

The Decorative Tier is purely display-only. If you need the TPB to automatically add a free gift or apply a Shopify Functions discount, use a functional tier type instead. See Tiered Progress Bar overview for a comparison of all tier types.

When to Use a Decorative Tier in the Tiered Progress Bar

The Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier is the right choice in several situations:

  • You want to display a cart threshold milestone with a custom label or message, but don't need the TPB to apply a reward automatically.

  • You're pairing the TPB with a Selectable Gift Offer (Cart Cross-Sell Widget) to let customers choose their own gift from a set of options when they meet your Data Source Rules.

  • You want to apply a partial discount (e.g., 50% off) on a specific product at a threshold, since TPB tiers using Shopify Functions discount products at 100% by default, the Decorative Tier lets you delegate the discount logic to a separate Gift With Purchase Widget (GWP) instead while the Tiered Progress Bar handles the visual progress bar separately.

Note: A Decorative Tier does not apply any discount or reward on its own. To automatically add a gift, pair it with a Gift With Purchase Widget. To let customers choose their gift, pair it with a Selectable Gift Offer using a Cart Cross-Sell Widget. See the setup instructions below for both options.

How to set up a Decorative Tier (Decorative-Only) in the Tiered Progress Bar

To add a Decorative Tier to your Tiered Progress Bar:

  1. Navigate to Rebuy Dashboard > Smart Cart > Your Carts > Open your cart's editor.

  2. Click "Add Component" in the "Goal Box." Select "Tier Progress Bar."

  3. Configure Tiers, then select the tier you want to configure (or add a new tier).

  4. Open the Choose Tier Type dropdown and select Decorative-Only.

  5. Set the Unlock Price to the cart subtotal threshold at which this tier should appear (e.g., $100, $200).

  6. Enter a Decorative Tier Label, which is the display name for the tier milestone (e.g., the offer or reward name customers are working toward).

  7. Configure your Icon and Labels & Text settings (see sections below).

  8. Save your changes.

Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier: Customizing Labels, Text, and Icons

The Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier gives you full control over the text that displays as customers approach and reach the threshold. You can configure two main label areas: the Decorative Tier Label (the milestone name) and the Amount Remaining Label (the in-progress message shown while the customer hasn't yet reached the threshold). You can also configure the icon size displayed at each tier milestone.

Configuring the Amount Remaining Label

The Amount Remaining Label is the message customers see while they haven't yet reached the tier threshold. Use the {{remaining_amount}} variable (a Rebuy template variable, not Shopify Liquid) to dynamically display how much more they need to add to their cart.

Example label copy:

You are {{remaining_amount}} away from something great!

Configuring the Tier Icon Settings

The Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier includes a configurable icon displayed at the tier milestone. Use the Configure Icon section to adjust the icon size β€” the size slider lets you choose between small, medium, and large to match your cart's visual design.

Tip: Keep icon size consistent across all tiers in your Tiered Progress Bar for a cleaner, more polished look.

Common Tiered Progress Bar Setups Using the Decorative Tier

The Decorative Tier is designed to be paired with one of two widget types depending on how you want to handle the gift or reward. Before setting up your Tiered Progress Bar, choose the widget type that fits your use case:

Widget Type

Use This When...

You want a single gift added to the cart automatically when the customer meets the requirements defined in the widget's Data Source Rules.

You want the customer to choose one gift from a set of options when they meet the criteria defined in the widget's Data Source Rules. Can be displayed as an embedded widget or a popup.

Note: These are two different widget types. The Gift With Purchase Widget auto-adds a specific product to the cart. The Selectable Gift With Purchase Offer uses a Cart Cross-Sell Widget (not the GWP widget) to present customers with a selection of gift options.

Pairing a Decorative Tier with a Gift With Purchase (GWP) Widget for a partial discount

Use the Gift With Purchase Widget when you want a single gift added to the cart automatically when the customer meets the requirements. This setup is also the correct approach when you want to apply a partial discount percentage (e.g., 50% off) at a threshold, since Tiered Progress Bar tiers using Shopify Functions apply a 100% discount by default and do not support partial percentages.

The Decorative Tier handles the visual progress bar. The GWP widget handles the automated gift and discount logic. The Decorative Tier's Unlock Price and the widget's Cart Subtotal rule must align β€” set the widget's Cart Subtotal rule $1 below the Unlock Price so both trigger at the same cart value.

Important: Because the Cart Subtotal rule uses "Is Greater Than," set your rule value just below your Decorative Tier's Unlock Price. For example, if your Unlock Price is $100, set the rule to "Cart Subtotal Is Greater Than $99." This ensures both the progress bar milestone and the widget trigger at the same cart value.

Setting up a Gift With Purchase Widget with a Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier

To configure a Gift With Purchase Widget that pairs with your Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier for a partial discount, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Rebuy Dashboard > Widgets and open or create a Gift With Purchase widget.

  2. In the widget's Data Source Rules, add a Cart Subtotal rule set to "Is Greater Than" and enter an amount just below your Decorative Tier's Unlock Price (e.g., if your Unlock Price is $100, set the rule to $99).

  3. Navigate to the Discount tab and enable Shopify Functions discounts.

  4. Set the discount percentage to your desired value (e.g., 50%).

  5. Save and publish the widget.

Pairing a Decorative Tier with a Selectable Gift Offer for customer-choice rewards

Use the Selectable Gift With Purchase Offer when you want customers to choose one gift from a set of options, provided they meet the criteria you define in the widget's Data Source Rules. This is configured using a Cart Cross-Sell Widget (not the Gift With Purchase Widget) and can be displayed as an embedded widget inside the cart or as a popup offer.

The Decorative Tier provides the visual progress bar milestone. The Cart Cross-Sell Widget handles the gift selection experience. Set the Cart Cross-Sell Widget's Cart Subtotal rule just below your Decorative Tier's Unlock Price so both trigger after the customer reaches the cart value.

Note: The Selectable Gift Offer is not a standard Rebuy widget type. It is a customized Cart Cross-Sell Widget that requires custom code to function correctly. This setup is recommended for advanced users.

Setting up a Selectable Gift Offer with a Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier

To configure a Selectable Gift Offer that pairs with your Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier, letting customers choose their own gift from a set of options when they reach the tier threshold, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Rebuy Dashboard > Smart Cart and open the Smart Cart you want to add the widget to.

  2. Add a Cross-Sell Widget component to your Smart Cart.

  3. In the widget's Data Source Rules, add a Cart Subtotal rule set to "Is Greater Than" and enter an amount just below your Decorative Tier's Unlock Price (e.g., if your Unlock Price is $100, set the rule to $99).

  4. Configure the Data Source to return the products you want customers to choose from as their free gift.

  5. In the widget's Settings, navigate to the Advanced tab and enable Shopify Functions discounting for the gift products.

  6. Add the required custom code to the widget's READY Callback box (Settings > Advanced tab > READY Callback). The code can be found in the full setup guide linked below.

  7. Save and publish the widget.

Note: Rebuy offers two types of Selectable Gift With Purchase Widgets, a pop-up version and an embedded version, each with its own setup steps and custom code. The steps above cover the general pairing with your Decorative Tier. For the full setup guide including method-specific code, see Selectable Gift-With-Purchase Widgets.

How do I set up the Data Source and Cart Subtotal Rule for my widget?

Both the Gift With Purchase Widget and the Selectable Gift Offer use a Datasource to define when the widget triggers and which products to return. Here is how to configure the Datasource so it aligns with your Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier.

Step 1: Open your widget's Datasource

In the settings for the widget you're pairing with your Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier (either a Gift With Purchase Widget or a Cross-Sell Widget), locate the Data Source section and click Edit to open the Datasource configuration.

Step 2: Add a Cart Subtotal Rule to match your Decorative Tier's Unlock Price

Inside the Datasource, configure a rule that triggers at the same cart value as your Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier:

  • IF: Cart Subtotal / Is Greater Than / your threshold amount (e.g., $99)

  • RETURN: Select the specific product or products you want to offer as the gift.

Important: Because the Cart Subtotal rule uses "Is Greater Than," set your rule value just below your Decorative Tier's Unlock Price. For example, if your Unlock Price is $100, set the rule to "Cart Subtotal Is Greater Than $99." This ensures the progress bar milestone and the widget trigger at the same cart value.

Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Decorative Tier and a functional tier in the Tiered Progress Bar?

A Tiered Progress Bar (TPB) Decorative Tier displays a visual milestone on the progress bar but does not apply any reward, discount, or action on its own. A functional tier, such as one using Shopify Functions, automatically applies a discount or adds a product when the threshold is reached. Use a Decorative Tier when you want to control the reward logic through a separate widget or when you need custom label messaging at a threshold without an automatic discount.

Can I use multiple Decorative Tiers in the same Tiered Progress Bar (TPB)?

Yes, you can add multiple tiers to a single Tiered Progress Bar, and any of them can be set to Decorative-Only. Each tier is configured independently with its own Unlock Price, label, and icon settings.

Why is my Tiered Progress Bar (TPB) applying a 100% discount instead of a partial percentage?

The Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier does not apply any discount on its own. It is display-only. If your Tiered Progress Bar is applying a 100% discount, you likely have a functional tier with Shopify Functions enabled, which discounts products at 100% by default. To apply a partial discount percentage at a threshold, switch that tier to Decorative-Only and configure the discount in a separate Gift With Purchase (GWP) widget using the Shopify Functions discount setting.

Does the Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier work without a connected widget?

Yes. The Tiered Progress Bar Decorative Tier can be used purely as a visual milestone with custom label copy, with no connected widget at all. This is useful for displaying progress toward a promotional threshold (e.g., free shipping) where the actual reward is handled elsewhere, or simply for informational messaging at a cart value checkpoint. When you do want to pair it with a reward, use the Gift With Purchase Widget for an automated gift or a Selectable Gift Offer (Cart Cross-Sell Widget) to let customers choose their own gift.

What is the Unlock Price threshold for a Decorative Tier in the Tiered Progress Bar?

The Unlock Price is the cart subtotal threshold that controls when a Tiered Progress Bar (TPB) Decorative Tier milestone becomes active. You set the Unlock Price when configuring each tier β€” for example, setting an Unlock Price of $100 means the Decorative Tier milestone activates when the customer's cart reaches $100. If you're pairing the Decorative Tier with a Gift With Purchase Widget or Selectable Gift Offer, set that widget's Cart Subtotal rule to $1 below the Unlock Price (e.g., "Cart Subtotal Is Greater Than $99") so both the progress bar and the widget trigger at the same cart value.
