Selectable Gift with Purchase Widget: Let Shoppers Choose Their Free Gift

Set up Rebuy's Selectable Gift with Purchase widget so shoppers choose their own free gifts at the cart milestones you set.

Written by Tom

The Selectable Gift with Purchase (SGWP) widget lets your shoppers choose which free gifts they claim once their cart reaches a spending milestone you set. Use this article to create an SGWP widget, place it in the cart, on a product page, or across your whole store, set the milestones that control how many gifts a shopper can claim, and discount those gifts to free at checkout.

Create a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget

You create a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget from the Widgets page in the Rebuy admin by choosing the widget first and its location second, and a guided setup then walks you through the layout, gift products, and milestones. No custom JavaScript or CSS is involved.

  1. In the Rebuy admin, click Cart & Merchandising and then Widgets in the left sidebar. On some plans the sidebar shows a single Merchandising Widgets entry instead, which opens the same Widgets page.

  2. Click Create New.

  3. Type "Gift" into the search bar to find the Selectable Gift with Purchase card, which is marked New and lists Global, Product Page, and Cart as its locations.

  4. Click Create on the Selectable Gift with Purchase card.

  5. In the Select a location for your Selectable Gift with Purchase Widget window, choose Cart, Product Page, or Global, then click Continue. This choice is permanent, so read the section on choosing where the widget appears below before you pick.

  6. On the Select Layout step, pick a layout from the options offered for that location.

  7. On the Configure Milestones step, choose the Data Source that supplies your gift products, set Max Number of Products displayed, and add your Milestones.

  8. Click Finish.

A new Selectable Gift with Purchase widget is named Gift With Purchase by default, and you can rename it in the header at the top of the setup steps. The widget name is internal only, and shoppers never see it. For the Widgets page itself, including the goal filters and the location window, see Widget Dashboard Page: Create a Widget and Manage the Ones You Have.

Choose where the widget appears

The Location you pick when you create the widget decides where the Selectable Gift with Purchase widget renders, and it cannot be changed after the widget is created. The table below lists each location and where the gift selection appears for the shopper.

To move a promotion from one location to another, create a new Selectable Gift with Purchase widget at the location you want. Editing the existing widget will not offer the other locations.

Choose a layout

The Layout you pick during setup controls how the gift selection is presented, and the options offered depend on the location you chose. The table below lists each layout by location and what the shopper sees. Unlike location, layout can be changed later from the widget editor, as long as the new layout belongs to the same location.

Letting shoppers collapse the gift section is a separate setting rather than a layout. Turn on Enable Accordion in the widget's Display tab, covered below, to add it to a Cart or Product Page layout.

Set milestones and gift capacity

Milestones control how many gifts a shopper can claim and how much they have to spend to claim them. Each milestone has an Unlock Price, the cart subtotal that unlocks it, and a Selectable Product Qty, the number of gifts it adds to the shopper's allowance. Each gift a shopper claims uses one unit of that allowance, and the widget adds one of each gift product, so the allowance is spent across different gifts rather than on extra units of the same gift.

The Unlock Price is the only unlock condition a Selectable Gift with Purchase milestone supports, and it always measures the cart subtotal. To unlock Selectable Gift with Purchase gifts on a different condition, such as a product in the cart, the number of items in the cart, or the shopper's country, set the Unlock Price to 0 and put that condition in the widget's Data Source.

Gift capacity is cumulative across every milestone the shopper has passed, not replaced by the highest one. If you set a $50 milestone with a Selectable Product Qty of 1 and a $100 milestone with a Selectable Product Qty of 1, a shopper with a $100+ subtotal can claim 2 gifts, not 1.

Milestones set capacity only. They do not assign specific gift products to specific tiers. Every gift your Data Source returns is available at every unlocked milestone, so a shopper who has unlocked two picks can spend both of them on any gifts in the list.

A Selectable Gift with Purchase widget lets a shopper claim each gift product once. A gift's Add button turns into a remove button once that gift is in the cart, so a shopper with 3 unlocked picks spends them on 3 different gifts, for example 1 each of products A, B, and C, and cannot take 3 of product A or 2 of A and 1 of B. If you want the gift options themselves to change as the cart grows, add cart subtotal conditions to the widget's Data Source so it returns a different set of products at each spend level.

Gift lines are excluded from the subtotal that unlocks milestones. Rebuy subtracts every gift line added by the Selectable Gift with Purchase widget from the cart total before comparing it to your Unlock Price, so a gift that carries a price of its own can never help hold the milestone it was claimed at.

Choose the gift products and how many are shown

The Data Source card at the top of the Milestones tab sets which products a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget offers as gifts. Rebuy creates a dedicated custom data source for each new Selectable Gift with Purchase widget, listed under Custom Endpoints by the widget type name and its ID, and selects it for you. Click Edit beside Data Source to open that data source in a new tab and add your gift products or rules, or pick a different data source from the dropdown. Max Number of Products displayed sets how many gift products the widget shows at once, from 1 to 20.

Important: The Data Source decides which gift products a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget shows, and the milestone Unlock Price decides when a shopper can claim them, so the Data Source does not need a Cart Subtotal rule. If you add a Cart Subtotal rule to a Selectable Gift with Purchase Data Source, set it to the same amount as a milestone's Unlock Price. Rebuy does not compare the two amounts, and a mismatch either locks the Add buttons on gifts the widget is showing or hides the widget after the milestone unlocks, with no error.

Show a milestone progress bar

Enable Progress Bar, in the Milestones tab of a Product Page or Global Selectable Gift with Purchase widget, adds a progress bar above the gift products that shows the shopper how close their cart is to each milestone. Each milestone gets its own step on the bar, labeled with the text you enter in that milestone's Progress Bar Language > Label field, for example Free Gift 1. A locked milestone shows a shopping bag icon on the bar, and a reached milestone shows a checkmark.

The Selectable Gift with Purchase progress bar icons are fixed and cannot be replaced. The Gift Icon setting in the Display tab changes only the icon beside the widget title, not the icons on the progress bar.

Add a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget to your Smart Cart

A Selectable Gift with Purchase widget at the Cart location does not appear on your storefront until you place it inside a Smart Cart. Saving the widget and turning on Live Mode is not enough on its own. The onboarding wizard does not make this link, and a banner stays in the widget editor until you do.

  1. In the Rebuy dashboard, open the Smart Cart editor for the cart you want the gift offer to appear in.

  2. Click the Add + from an anchor area of the Smart Cart and select a Widget component.

  3. Click Create Selectable Gift With Purchase or if you have already created one, Select your Selectable Gift with Purchase widget from the Select Widget list. The panel only lists widget types valid for that position, so a widget built at the Product Page or Global location will not appear here.

  4. Position the widget in the cart layout and save.

Open your storefront and add enough to the cart to pass your first Unlock Price. The gift selection should appear inside the Smart Cart drawer. If it does not, confirm the widget is in Live Mode and that the subtotal shown in the cart, excluding any gift lines, has actually reached your Unlock Price.

Install a Product Page or Global widget on your theme

Product Page and Global Selectable Gift with Purchase widgets need a placement in your Shopify theme. Nothing is injected automatically, and a widget with no placement renders nothing and reports no error. These locations do not require Rebuy's Smart Cart.

The supported path is the Rebuy Widget app block:

  1. Copy your widget ID from the Widget ID badge at the top of the Rebuy widget editor.

  2. In Shopify, go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.

  3. Open the template where the widget should render. For a Product Page widget, open your product template. For a Global widget, use a section that renders on every page, such as the footer.

  4. Add the Rebuy Widget app block where the gift selection should appear, for example directly below the Add to cart button.

  5. In the block settings, confirm Enable Widget is on and paste your widget ID into Widget ID.

  6. Click Save.

The theme editor preview shows the Selectable Gift with Purchase widget in the block's position once the widget ID is entered. If the block stays empty, check that the widget ID matches the one in the Rebuy widget editor and that Enable Widget is on. The block's Enable Product ID setting lets the widget pass the product being viewed to its Data Source, which only matters if your gift Data Source uses the viewed product to decide which gifts to return.

As an alternative, the widget's Advanced tab provides a placement div, in the form <div data-rebuy-id="12345"></div>, that your theme developer can paste directly into the theme where the widget should render. Rebuy Support does not build or troubleshoot theme edits.

Discount the gift to free at checkout

The Discount tab is what makes a selected gift actually free at checkout. Rebuy uses Shopify Functions to create an automatic discount scoped to the widget, which is available on all Shopify plan types.

  1. Open the widget's Discount tab.

  2. Toggle on Discounted By Functions.

  3. Set Discount Type to Percentage.

  4. Set Percentage Discount to 100% for a free gift, or a lower percentage for a discounted gift.

  5. Set Discount Message to the label shoppers see on the discounted line, for example FREE GIFT.

  6. Save.

Add a gift to a test cart and confirm the line shows at $0.00 with the original price struck through, both in the widget and at Shopify Checkout. If the gift shows as free in the widget but is charged at checkout, Discounted By Functions is off, and Rebuy is only applying a visual discount.

Turn the discount off manually when the promotion ends. Uninstalling the widget or turning off Live Mode does not remove the discount from items already in a shopper's cart.

Important: Do not use a $0-priced product as your gift. Give the gift product a real price and let Shopify Functions discount it to $0 for qualifying shoppers. A $0 product can be added to any cart for free by anyone who finds its URL, whether or not they qualify for your promotion.

How Rebuy removes gifts when the cart no longer qualifies

Rebuy reconciles claimed gifts against the shopper's current cart automatically, so a shopper cannot keep a gift they no longer qualify for. When a shopper removes items or lowers quantities and the subtotal falls below a milestone, Rebuy removes claimed gifts down to the number they still qualify for, taking the most recently added gift first. This applies whether the gift is free or carries a price.

The same reconciliation runs when the shopper clicks the native checkout button in the cart. Rebuy completes any pending gift removal before the shopper is sent to Shopify Checkout, so the cart that reaches Shopify Checkout carries no more gifts than it qualifies for. Removing gifts on the Shopify Checkout page itself is available on Shopify Plus only, with a Rebuy Smart Component block placed in checkout. On other Shopify plans, Rebuy cannot remove a gift once the shopper is on the Shopify Checkout page.

Customize the gift icon and accordion

The Display tab of a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget controls the Gift Icon shown beside the widget title and the Accordion that lets shoppers collapse the gift selection in the cart or on the product page. Open the widget in the widget editor and go to Display to change either setting.

Add a gift icon to the widget title

Gift Icon places a gift icon to the left of the Selectable Gift with Purchase widget's title, at every location and in every layout. Turn on the Gift Icon toggle in the Display tab, then drag the Icon Size slider to set how large the icon appears. The label above the slider, such as Medium, shows the current size. To replace Rebuy's default gift icon with your own image, click Upload Custom and upload the image.

Let shoppers collapse the gift selection

Enable Accordion adds an expand and collapse arrow to the header of a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget in the cart or on the product page, so shoppers can fold the gift list away. The widget loads expanded, and collapsing it leaves only the header with the widget title in view. Turn on Enable Accordion in the Accordion section of the Display tab to add the arrow.

A collapsed Selectable Gift with Purchase widget expands again on its own when the gifts on offer change or the shopper claims a gift.

Change the text shoppers see in the widget

The Language tab of a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget sets the text shoppers see in the widget header and on each gift's button. Open the widget in the widget editor and go to Language to edit it. Text entered in the Language tab is static, so it reads the same at every milestone. To change the title as the shopper unlocks more gifts, use a Data Source rule, covered below.

Edit the header and product labels

The General section of the Language tab holds the Selectable Gift with Purchase widget's header text and product labels. The table below lists each field and the text it controls.

Change the title at each milestone with a Data Source rule

A Selectable Gift with Purchase widget's title changes as the cart grows only when a Data Source rule sets it, because the Language tab Title is static. A rule can return a Title alongside its gift products, and when that rule matches the shopper's cart, the widget shows the rule's title in place of the Language tab Title.

  1. In the widget's Milestones tab, click Edit beside Data Source to open the widget's data source.

  2. Add a rule and set its IF condition to Cart Subtotal Is Greater Than an amount just below the milestone's Unlock Price, for example 99.99 for a $100 milestone.

  3. Set the rule's RETURN to the gift products you want to offer at that milestone.

  4. Click + below the RETURN to add an AND row, choose Title, and enter the title for that milestone, for example Choose your second gift!

  5. Save the data source.

Add enough to a test cart to pass the milestone and confirm the widget title changes to the rule's text. If the Language tab title still shows, check that the rule's IF condition matches the cart subtotal you tested with.

Find Selectable Gift with Purchase revenue in reporting

Rebuy records every gift claimed from a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget as its own line item on the shopper's order, tagged with line item properties that identify the widget it came from. Those properties carry through from the cart to the Shopify order, and Rebuy's reporting reads them to attribute the gift to your widget.

The table below lists the line item properties Rebuy adds to a Selectable Gift with Purchase gift line, the value each one records, and what that value identifies.

_source

In Rebuy reporting, Selectable Gift with Purchase gifts appear under their own attribution Type, Rebuy Selectable Gift with Purchase, which is separate from the Rebuy Gift with Purchase type recorded by the standard Gift With Purchase widget. If you run more than one Selectable Gift with Purchase widget, break the report down by Widget and look for each widget's ID to see its results on their own.

Selectable Gift with Purchase gift lines keep these properties even when the tracking options under the widget's Advanced > Product Properties settings are turned off, which is not how other Rebuy widgets behave. A Selectable Gift with Purchase widget uses these properties to recognize its own gift lines and remove gifts the cart no longer qualifies for, so they are always written for this widget type.

Selectable Gift with Purchase limitations

The following constraints apply to the Selectable Gift with Purchase widget.

  • Location is permanent. A Selectable Gift with Purchase widget created at the Cart, Product Page, or Global location cannot be switched to one of the other locations afterward. To move a promotion, for example from Cart to Product Page, build a new Selectable Gift with Purchase widget at the location you want.

  • Cart widgets need to be placed in a Smart Cart manually. Creating the widget does not put it on the storefront.

  • Gift removal on the Shopify Checkout page is Shopify Plus only. Selectable Gift with Purchase removes gifts in the cart on every Shopify plan, but removes them on the Shopify Checkout page only on Shopify Plus stores with a Rebuy Smart Component block placed in checkout.

  • Milestones do not map gifts to tiers. Every gift the Data Source returns is available at every unlocked milestone.

  • A shopper can claim each gift product only once. The Selectable Product Qty on your milestones caps the total number of gifts across different products, so a shopper with 3 unlocked picks chooses 3 different gifts rather than 3 of the same one. A Selectable Gift with Purchase widget has no setting that allows more than one unit of a single gift. To give shoppers several units of one gift, offer a multi-pack product or variant, such as a 3-pack, as the gift.

  • Milestones unlock on cart subtotal only. A Selectable Gift with Purchase milestone has no condition other than its Unlock Price. For a product-in-cart, item-count, or country trigger, set the Unlock Price to 0 and put the condition in the widget's Data Source.

  • Rebuy does not check Data Source Cart Subtotal rules against milestone Unlock Prices. When a Selectable Gift with Purchase Data Source Cart Subtotal rule and a milestone Unlock Price are set to different amounts, the widget either shows gifts shoppers cannot add yet or stays hidden after the milestone unlocks, and no error appears. Set each Cart Subtotal rule to the same amount as a milestone's Unlock Price.

  • The progress bar is not available in the Cart layouts. A Selectable Gift with Purchase widget at the Cart location has no built-in milestone progress bar. To show cart progress alongside a Cart-location gift offer, pair the widget with a Decorative Tier in the Smart Cart's Tiered Progress Bar.

  • Rebuy's Shopify Functions discounting does not support conditional discounts driven by Data Sources, which are visual only, except when using Shopify discounts or the Script editor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I control which gift unlocks at which milestone in a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget?

No, milestones in a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget set how many gifts a shopper can claim and never assign particular products to particular tiers. The order of products returned by the Data Source has no effect on which milestone they belong to, because they belong to all of them. To change which gifts are on offer as the cart grows, put cart subtotal conditions on the widget's Data Source so it returns a different set of products at each spend level. A strict outcome where one tier awards only product A and the next awards only product B is not something the widget enforces.

Can a shopper claim more than one of the same gift in a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget?

No, a shopper can claim each gift product only once from a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget, and the Selectable Product Qty on your milestones caps the total number of gifts across different products. A shopper who has unlocked 3 gift picks from a widget whose Data Source returns products A, B, and C can claim 1 each of A, B, and C, but not 3 of A or 2 of A and 1 of B. Once a gift is in the cart, its Add button becomes a remove button, which lets the shopper swap that gift for a different one rather than add a second unit. To give shoppers several units of one gift, offer a multi-pack product or variant, such as a 3-pack, as the gift.

Should I set the spending threshold for a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget in the milestone or in the Data Source?

The milestone Unlock Price is where a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget's spending threshold belongs, and the widget's Data Source only needs to return the gift products. A shopper can claim a Selectable Gift with Purchase gift only when both layers pass, since the Data Source decides which gift products the widget shows and the milestone decides whether the cart subtotal has earned a gift and how many. You do not need a Cart Subtotal rule in the Data Source for the Unlock Price to work.

If you do add Cart Subtotal rules to a Selectable Gift with Purchase Data Source, for example to offer a different set of gifts at each spend level, set each rule to the same amount as a milestone's Unlock Price. Cart Subtotal rules have no "greater than or equal to" operator, so use Is Greater Than with an amount just below the Unlock Price, such as 99.99 for a $100 milestone. Rebuy does not compare Data Source Cart Subtotal rules to milestone Unlock Prices and shows no warning when they differ, so a mismatch fails silently on the storefront.

Why does my Selectable Gift with Purchase widget unlock at a different cart total than I set?

A Selectable Gift with Purchase widget that unlocks at a different cart total than expected can be caused by a Data Source Cart Subtotal rule set to a different amount than the milestone Unlock Price. Rebuy applies both thresholds and does not flag the difference, so the widget behaves in one of the following ways.

  • When the Data Source Cart Subtotal amount is lower than the milestone Unlock Price, the Selectable Gift with Purchase widget shows gift products at the Data Source amount, but shoppers cannot add a gift until the cart subtotal reaches the Unlock Price.

  • When the Data Source Cart Subtotal amount is higher than the milestone Unlock Price, the Selectable Gift with Purchase widget stays hidden after the cart passes the Unlock Price, since the Data Source returns no gift products to show until the cart reaches the Data Source amount.

To fix a mismatched Selectable Gift with Purchase threshold, open the widget's Milestones tab, click Edit beside Data Source, and either set the Cart Subtotal rule to match the milestone's Unlock Price or remove the Cart Subtotal rule and let the Unlock Price set the threshold on its own.

Can a Selectable Gift with Purchase gift unlock on something other than cart subtotal?

Yes, a Selectable Gift with Purchase gift can unlock on a condition other than cart subtotal, such as a specific product in the cart, the number of items in the cart, or the shopper's country, when you set the milestone Unlock Price to 0 and put the condition in the widget's Data Source. Milestones in a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget unlock on cart subtotal only, and every widget needs at least one milestone, so an Unlock Price of 0 keeps that milestone unlocked for every cart and leaves the Data Source to decide when gifts appear.

  1. In the widget's Milestones tab, set the first milestone's Unlock Price to 0 and its Selectable Product Qty to the number of gifts a qualifying shopper can claim.

  2. Click Edit beside Data Source to open the widget's data source.

  3. Add a rule whose IF condition is the trigger you want, such as Cart to check for a product in the cart, Cart Total Item Count to check the number of items, or Country Code to check the shopper's country.

  4. Set the rule's RETURN to your gift products, confirm no other rule in the data source returns gift products when your condition is not met, and save the data source.

When a cart stops matching the Selectable Gift with Purchase Data Source rule, for example because the shopper removes the qualifying product, Rebuy removes the gift once the widget refreshes its gift products after that cart change. Rebuy removes a gift the Data Source no longer returns only on a page where the Selectable Gift with Purchase widget has loaded. On a page where the widget has not loaded, the gift stays in the cart until the shopper reaches a page where the widget loads, since an Unlock Price of 0 is always met and the milestone never removes the gift on its own.

How do I install a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget on a product page?

Add the Rebuy Widget app block to your product template in the Shopify theme editor, confirm Enable Widget is on, and paste the widget ID from the Widget ID badge at the top of the Rebuy widget editor into the block's Widget ID field. No liquid file edit is required. The placement div from the widget's Advanced tab is the manual alternative. A Product Page Selectable Gift with Purchase widget with no placement renders nothing and shows no error message, so an empty product page is the symptom of a missing app block rather than a broken widget.

What is the Global location for in a Selectable Gift with Purchase widget?

The Global location keeps a Selectable Gift with Purchase offer reachable from any page on your store rather than only inside the cart or on a product page. It still needs a placement in a section that renders site-wide. Both Global layouts open on their own when the shopper's cart crosses a milestone with an unclaimed gift, and both close on their own once every unlocked gift has been claimed. The Gift Box layout also leaves a floating gift icon in the bottom-left corner of the page, so the shopper can reopen the gift selection whenever they choose, which suits an offer you want reachable throughout a long browsing session. The Add-to-Cart Popup Modal layout has no icon for reopening it, which suits an offer you want seen at the moment the milestone is reached. If a shopper closes either Global layout, it does not reopen on its own until a higher milestone unlocks more gifts, or until the cart drops below that milestone and crosses it again.

What happens to claimed gifts if the cart no longer qualifies when the shopper checks out?

When a cart no longer qualifies for its claimed Selectable Gift with Purchase gifts, Rebuy removes the extra gifts in the cart on every Shopify plan, on every cart change and again when the shopper clicks the checkout button in the cart, taking the most recently claimed gift first. Removing gifts on the Shopify Checkout page itself is available on Shopify Plus only, with a Rebuy Smart Component block placed in checkout. On Shopify plans other than Plus, Rebuy cannot remove a gift once the shopper is on the Shopify Checkout page.
