The Filters and Sort options in the Smart Search Results Page editor control how shoppers refine and reorder their search results. To configure them, go to Smart Search → Results Page in your Rebuy admin to open the Configure Results Page editor, then select Filters or Sorting from the editor's left navigation. This article is part of the Smart Search Results Page documentation set — for a general introduction, see Smart Search Results Page: Overview. The filters and sort options that appear to shoppers are based on the product data and configuration you have set up in Shopify.
Filters
The Filters section in the Results Page editor controls which options shoppers can use to refine their search results. To manage filters, select Filters from the editor's left navigation, then click Edit to open the Filter Options panel, where you enable, relabel, and configure each filter. Smart Search organizes filters into four groups: standard filter options that are available on every store, product options pulled from your Shopify product setup, product metafields, and variant metafields. Each group is described below. As you configure your filters, you can reorder them by clicking and dragging. Filters are applied and displayed in a top-down priority order, so the filter at the top of the list appears first to shoppers.
Filter options
The filter options are the standard filters that are available on every Smart Search store, regardless of how your catalog is set up in Shopify. You can enable and manage the following filter options:
Availability — filters products by whether they are in or out of stock. This filter is disabled when out-of-stock products are hidden. To re-enable it, update the Hide Out of Stock Products setting on your Smart Search global settings page — see Smart Search Global Settings.
Product Type — filters products by their Shopify product type.
Price — filters products by price range.
Product Tags — filters products by tag. You can choose to display all tags, select specific tags to display, or exclude specific tags.
Vendor — filters products by their Shopify vendor.
Product options
The product options filters let shoppers narrow results by a product's Shopify options, such as color, size, or material. Unlike the standard filter options above, the product options available here are not a fixed list — Smart Search pulls them dynamically from the product and variant options you have configured in Shopify, so each store sees only its own options. For example, a store whose products use Color, Size, and Material options in Shopify sees those three as available product option filters, while a store that uses different options sees its own set. Toggle on any product option to offer it as a filter, and use its label field to change how it appears to shoppers.
Screenshot above: The Product Options panel, opened by clicking EDIT on the Filters screen. Each product option is pulled from your Shopify setup and listed by its raw option name — color, size, style, title — with an on/off toggle and a Filter Label field. Here the labels have been customized (for example, size is relabeled "Sizing" and title is relabeled "Title Name"), and those custom labels appear in the filter list on the left.
Product and variant metafields
You can also use product and variant metafields as filters to give shoppers more advanced ways to refine their searches. You can enable up to 25 product metafields and up to 25 variant metafields as filters. The following metafield types are supported for both product and variant metafields:
Single line text
Single line text (list)
Decimal
Integer
True or false
A metafield value is not available as a filter option if it exceeds 256 characters, exceeds 40 words, or contains HTML. Any HTML detected in a metafield value is stripped from the filter data.
If you do not have any product or variant metafields configured in Shopify, the metafields section does not appear in the editor. If you have metafields configured in Shopify but do not see them here, resync your product data — see Sync Product Data, Store Data, and Clear Cache. If the section is still missing after a resync, contact Rebuy support for assistance.

Filter labels
You can override the display name of any filter on the Results Page using the Filter Label field. Enter a custom name to replace the default label with one that better fits your brand or product terminology.
If you use the exclude_rebuy product tag in your Shopify product settings to prevent a product from appearing in Rebuy widgets, that product is also excluded from Smart Search results. For details on how to use this tag and manage product visibility, see Hide Products From Being Recommended.
Filter styling settings
The Filter Styling settings control how filter options look and behave for shoppers on the Results Page. You find them on the Filters screen of the Results Page editor, under Filter Settings. The five available settings and their defaults are listed in the following table:
Setting | What it does |
Icon Selectors | Sets the icon style used to expand or collapse filter groups. Choose Plus/Minus or Chevron. |
Show Product Count | Shows the number of products available for each filter option. |
Show Selected Filters | Displays the filters a shopper has chosen at the top of the filter panel. |
Keep All Filter Options Collapsed | Starts with all filter groups collapsed so shoppers expand them manually. |
Always Show First Filter Expanded | Automatically expands the first filter in the list when the page loads. |
How Smart Search filters combine
When a shopper selects more than one filter, Smart Search combines those selections to decide which products appear in the results. It uses two behaviors, depending on whether the selected filters come from the same filter or from different filters. A filter is a single category a shopper can refine by, such as Color, Size, or Price, and each filter contains the individual values a shopper can select within it, such as Blue or Green within Color.
Different filters combine with AND, which narrows the results. When a shopper selects values from two or more different filters, a product must match all of them to appear. Selecting a Color and a Size together, for example, shows only products that match the chosen color and the chosen size.
Multiple values in the same filter combine with OR, which widens the results. When a shopper selects two or more values within one filter, a product that matches any of those values appears. Selecting two colors, for example, shows products in either color.
For example, suppose a shopper filters a clothing store by Color: Blue, Color: Green, and Size: Medium. Within the Color filter, Blue and Green combine with OR, and the Color filter then combines with the Size filter using AND, giving the logic (Blue OR Green) AND Medium. The results include:
A green medium shirt is included, because it matches a selected color and the selected size.
A blue medium jacket is included, because it matches a selected color and the selected size.
A red medium shirt is excluded, because red is not a selected color, even though it is medium.
A blue large shirt is excluded, because large is not the selected size, even though blue is a selected color.
Because this logic is precise, shoppers may see fewer results than a looser match would return, and a search shows zero results when no product matches every selected filter. That is expected behavior, not an error. This logic applies on the Results Page and to headless integrations, it requires no merchant action, and there is currently no setting that switches this combining behavior from AND to OR across different filters.
Sort options
The Sort options in the Results Page editor control how shoppers can reorder their search results. Select Sorting from the editor's left navigation to configure them, then click Edit to open the Sort By panel where you enable, relabel, and reorder each option. You can enable the following sort options:
Relevance — orders results by best match to the search term.
Best Sellers — orders results by sales performance over a lookback period. You can set the lookback period to Today, 7 days, 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, or a Custom timeframe of 1 to 365 days.
Highest Price — orders results from the highest price to the lowest.
Lowest Price — orders results from the lowest price to the highest.
New Arrivals — orders results with the newest products first.
Highest Rating — orders results from the highest-rated products to the lowest.
Lowest Rating — orders results from the lowest-rated products to the highest.
Oldest — orders results with the oldest products first.
Name (A–Z) — orders results alphabetically by product name.
Name (Z–A) — orders results in reverse alphabetical order by product name.
As you configure the sort options, you can reorder them by clicking and dragging. They are prioritized in a top-down order, so the sort option at the top of the list is the default shoppers see.

The left panel shows Your Default Sort (Relevance) and the draggable Sort Options list — Relevance, New Arrivals, Best Sellers, Highest Rating, Name (A–Z), Highest Price, and Lowest Price. The preview highlights the shopper-facing Sort By dropdown, which defaults to the sort option at the top of the list.)
Sort option labels
You can override the default names of the Sort By Options that shoppers see on the Results Page using the Sort By Label field in the Sorting editor. Enter a custom name to replace the default label.
Sorting dropdown styling
The Sorting Dropdown Styling setting controls the appearance of the "Sort by" dropdown on the Results Page. You can choose between the following two styles:
Box Around Dropdown — displays the dropdown inside a bordered box. This is the default.
No Box Around Dropdown — displays the dropdown without a surrounding box.
To style the sort dropdown beyond these two options, add your own CSS in the Results Page editor's Custom CSS block. For ready-made selectors and styling examples, see CSS Styling Tricks for Customizing Smart Search.
When Content Search is enabled and a shopper is viewing the Blog & Pages tab, the Filters and Sort By controls are hidden — they apply to the Products tab only. For details on Content Search, see Smart Search: Content Search.
